Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Honus Wagner’s 1909 card, which sold for a reported $2.8 million in 2007, is widely regarded as holding the record. It’s estimated that just 50 to 100 of these cards still exist, according to the baseballcards101 website. Part of the reason that card is so valuable is that relatively few were printed. In those days baseball cards were distributed in cigarette packs; legend has it that Hall of Famer Wagner didn’t want to be associated with tobacco so he insisted that production be stopped. Other sources, noting Wagner’s appearance in tobacco ads, suspect that he might have been unhappy with his compensation. The card’s previous owners make an interesting story. They include another sports legend, hockey great Wayne Gretzky, and Wal-Mart, which bought the card in the 1990s as a promotion for its line of baseball card products
