Whats the typical punishment for loitering?

If you are in Australia and you can afford it you should get yourself a good lawyer and try to get off this charge for more than one reason. You are not likely to get any more than a fine plus court costs. However you are better to not have this charge against your name especially if you don’t have a criminal record and you are an otherwise well behaved young person. A small charge like loitering can have a catastrophic affect on your career even if all you were doing was sitting there with a friend talking. Do all you can to get off this. some professions won’t have you if they know that you have a “criminal” history. This includes loitering. You need to seek even a barrister – the cost may be worth is long term. I am not offering this as legal advice. This is just common sense. Good Luck!!!
