Whats the true meaning of thanksgiving day?
Thanksgiving originated after the first winter the Pilgrims settled here. Basically they were thankful those that survived did so. There are some popular stories about the indigenous Indians sharing in this meal, but alot of the stories of our beginnings have been glamorized over time to make them more palatable. The true meaning of Thanksgiving is a harvest celebration, or a pause before winter to thank what ever religious spirit you believe in, or simply your family and friends for having survived the past year. We do not practice a common religion, so for our family we thank what we believe is responsible for our continued ability to gather together each year. I started my adult life praying for the end of the Vietnam war, and to bring our brothers, fathers and son’s home for Christmas. This year, again, we will be praying for the end of Bush’s Folly, the Iraq “war”, and to bring our sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends home for Christmas.
