Whats the treatment for vestibular neuronitis?
Vestibular neuronitis usually goes away on its own without treatment. Since it appears to be caused by a virus, antibiotics are of no help. Treatment involves comfort measures until the infection has run its course. Sometimes severe symptoms can be controlled with medications, such as antihistamines (for example, Antivert). Vestibular Neuronitis is treated with two types of medications. The first is designed to suppress the symptoms of vertigo and may include medications such as Antivert (meclizine), Compazine, Phenergan, or Valium (diazepam). These medications are effective at suppressing the vertigo and nausea and should be used to alleviate symptoms. In addition, a short course of prednisone, a steroid drug that suppresses the patient’s immune system, leads to a more rapid and complete recovery from vestibular neuronitis.
