The transmutation circle for alchemy is a symbol required for alchemy (although it is possible to use alchemy without a circle), which can be drawn on the spot or beforehand. Alchemy is sort of a circular process, what with the whole equivalent exchange thing, so the transmutation circle sort of sums that up. It provides a conduit for the energy that makes alchemy go. It’s got alchemical runes in it, which tell what the transmutation is going to do, so circles vary depending on what the alchemist wants their alchemy to do.
