What’s the training progression at the Budokai?

You will start by learning rolls and falls, then will move into the basic techniques of the art – our Yawara list. As you grow more comfortable with these techniques, we introduce you to other technique lists – throwing arts, self defense arts, etc. We also spend some time cross training in Karate and Aikido to improve our striking and footwork/balance. How long will it take me to get my black belt? The advancement question is a difficult one: we’re not very focused on rank, and gradings are not all that frequent. We train to improve our technique, not to collect belts. Our particular brand of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu is also very comprehensive, and has a lot of techniques and principles to grasp. The average time from white to black belt, if you regularly attend at least 2 classes a week, is between 5 and 6 years. Some take less, some people take significantly longer.
