1. Union– Participation numbers in union aren’t the highest in NZ sports, but is by FAR the most followed and watched sport. 2. Cricket– Most popular summer sport, and the second most watched and followed sport in New Zealand. 3. Netball– National teams don’t receive much media attention, but the participation numbers are outstanding- It is considered the sport most accessible to girls and women. 4. Soccer– Not as popular as in other countries, but it has a decent following and is also popular as a participation sport, but usually only among children under 12 or so. 5. Tough one. Sailing is always popular, as NZ has more boats than people! League is also played, although it is not as popular as in Australia. Basketball is the most played sport I believe in NZ, and the national team is modestly successful internationally. There are lots of elderly people in New Zealand, so leisure sports like golf or bowls are played in retirement communities, LOL.
