Whats the story with email addresses in my access log/report?
This page is a WebCom FAQ. It explains in detail the sources of the email addresses recorded (or not recorded) in your personal access log and Site Activity Report through E-mail. In most cases, httpd (Web) servers record only the domain name of the site being used to access your page, and not the userid of the person accessing it. Most browsers, actually, intentionally withhold the email address of the accesser, for reasons of privacy. Command line FTP clients pass the email address typed in by the user. The user can omit, mistype, or falsify the email address. Graphical FTP clients (including Web browsers connecting to the FTP server) usually have the user’s email address in a configuration file. In many cases, the user fails to enter it correctly, so again the “email address” recorded in your address may be invalid. Often, you will get the default email address shipped with the software, such as “your_email_address@here” or “WWWuser@your.domain.here”.
