Whats the Story, Blades of Glory?
I’m mortified at my last-place finish of last week. Mortified. I blame Microsoft, the war in Iraq and the father of Anna Nicole Smith’s baby. Blades of Glory What It’s About: Two feuding ice skaters (Will Ferrell and Jon Heder), after being banned from the sport for fighting, find a loophole that allows them to compete in pairs skating. They team up despite hating each other. I think you can see where this goes. Why It Might Do Well: He’s back! Clothes-shedding, gloriously fleshy Ferrell is back! The comic actor’s fanbase stayed away from Stranger Than Fiction (a movie that, frankly, I loved), but this movie’s right back in familiar territory, aiming squarely for the Talladega Nights crowd and scoring laughs with some of the more, umm, inventive choreography ever put to film. Why It Might Not Do Well: Figure skating isn’t quite as automatic a male draw as NASCAR, even if it is being parodied. Also, the directors aren’t exactly big names: Josh Gordon and Will Speck. Who, you might ask?
