Whats the status of the Teacher in Space Program?
After the Space Shuttle Challenger accident in 1986, the Teacher in Space Program was put on hold while the agency investigated and recovered from the mishap. In 1998, NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin decided that the program would not be revived in its old form, but instead NASA would expand the astronaut corps to include educators and others who would go through regular mission specialsts’ training. The first person to enter the corps that way will be Barbara Morgan, who was Christa McAuliffe’s backup in the Teacher in Space program.
