Whats the secret to taking care of orchids?
A few orchids are terrestial, meaning they grow in soil, but the majority of them are epiphytes, growing in the detritus that collects in the crotch of tree branches. The root system is more for securing the plants to the trees they grow in, than for the collection of nutrients. Moisture is collected from rain and humidity in the air. Most orchids like to be snug in their pots. Your plant most likely does not need to be transplanted, unless it is tipping over. Some orchids are planted in a mixture of wood chips and charcoal. This medium will break down over time, and needs to be refreshed every couple of years. This will not happen with the lava rock. You can find special fertilizer for orchids at many places, I get mine at Home Depot. This will encourage them to rebloom. Most bloom once a year, some more often.
