Whats the real value of “excellence” as the focal point of what we do at Wright State?
Goldenberg: Excellent people are at the heart of a great university. Faculty are role models and mentors. They set the tone for communicating academic excellence — the core value of the best institutions — and they enhance our ability to attract other faculty and students. However, without an excellent staff, we would not be able to achieve our goals. Faculty excellence must occur in an environment where excellence among staff is encouraged and rewarded. Dialogue: How have you inspired faculty to pursue excellence? Goldenberg: Helping faculty achieve excellence is a passion of mine. Over the years, I’ve rewarded senior faculty for mentoring junior faculty and col-laborative efforts, provided salary offset and partial return for indirects for grants and merit pay increases. I’ve also consulted nationally with other higher education institutions in faculty development. I believe it’s also important for me, as president, to be a visible member of the faculty.
