Whats the procedure for soil solarization?

0

Soil solarization is straight forward and effective. The “thermal death point” of weeds is 140 F (60 C). Solarization uses trapped solar energy to raise the soil temperature to that level. Wait until the average daytime temperatures are 85 F (29 C) or higher. Cultivate and rake the soil level, remove the large clods, and irrigate well. Wait 2 weeks for surface seeds to germinate, again cultivate and rake smooth. Give another deep irrigation and tarp with 2 mil clear plastic. Bury the edges of the plastic to give a tight seal and solarize for 4 weeks. Once the plastic is removed and the soil has dried somewhat, it is ready for planting. Appendix B cites a concise booklet by Hesketh and Elmore that spells out the details.
