Whats the point of the Assignment Desk?

The assignment desk was originally created as a mechanism to notify willing SearchWarp writers of popular current events topics, with the hopes of being able to use the articles written on these topics on the SearchWarp home page. What it’s turned into is something quite different, unfortunately. The problem from our end has been that it just required too much work to constantly come up with new topics. Following the latest trends requires constant research, and that has proved to be too much for one person to do. I’d like to redo the Assignment Desk. Probably make it user-driven instead of administrator-driven so that it won’t rely on the research of just one person. Also, the assignments should be sent out not only by email, but also by Twitter and possibly text messaging. There should be at least one new assignment per day, and then a way for assignment articles to quickly get to the home page. A
