But the fact that it and many other compound dissolve in water is vital to your existence, and to the world we know. Water is known as the “universal solvent”. It carries dissolved substances around in our bodies which allow us to live. Dissolved substances in the oceans and surface water support life for gazillions of plants and animals. The ability for substances to dissolve in water is a vital part of the chemistry of our entire ecosystem.
