The penalty for this sort of thing is usually civil in nature. In other words, you’d be subject to a lawsuit and damages, not criminal charges and a prison sentence. Realistically, though, for what you describe, nothing will likely happen. As long as there was no “gain” for the publisher (monetary or other benefit), and as long as you didn’t negatively impact the authors ability to make money with his comic strip (and it certainly sounds like you didn’t), nothing will happen.
