The Coulter Pine is perhaps the tree you are thinking of. The Coulter Pine grows 40-80′ tall and 1-3′ in diameter. It has stiff, blue-green needles that are 10″ long in bundles of 3. The large oval cones are 10″ long as well and are the heaviest of all pine cones.
