What’s the most important thing to remember when making a creature feature?
Something I’m always asking myself on set (and also in the cinema) is: Do I care? If I don’t care about the characters, I don’t like the film. So, part of my job is making sure I don’t put anything in the way of people giving a shit about the cast. In a creature feature, I think it’s important to have the characters act the way normal people would. It’s no fun to watch a character do something dumb or illogical in a frightening situation. Is it particularly tough to get the balance between comedy and horror just right? I did a dozen rewrites or so on the script, not counting tweaks here and there. It was hard to balance the horror and comedy, but I also believe we don’t live our lives in genres. Our lives are messy and complicated, so I try my best to write that way. What’s working against me is the fact that, after a hard day, people would like to know what they’re getting into when they pop in a DVD… and I can’t blame them for that.
