Netscape has a tutorial about certificates. The OpenSSL site has a tutorial on the specifics of generating certificates, but this is incomplete. I’m assuming you want a cert w/o a password if you are using this for a web server. /tools/cs/openssl/openssl.cnf has sane values for some of the questions; you may want to look at it.
