I read some research that says that the average user spends 7 seconds looking at a page before deciding whether to move on. That might be only when they first visit a page, though. You can use this free tool to find out how long your page takes to load at various modem speeds: http://www.webpageanalyzer.com/ I reckon 10 seconds is good (at 56Kb modem speed), and 20 tops. Anything more might be considered too slow. This tool also tells me that the book pictures are quite big files. If you can reduce their size, it will speed up the page loading.
