Whats the main difference between a brand-name and a generic drug?
The answer is price! Generic drugs on average cost between 40% to 50% less than brand-name drugs. The quality, purity, effectiveness and safety of the drug are identical. Are generic drugs like no-name brands of coffee or soda pop? Absolutely not. And for one very important reason. No-name brands of most consumer goods do not have to meet the same government requirements. All they must do is taste as good, or better than the original product and encourage people to buy them. Brand X Cola may taste better or worse than Coke ® or Pepsi ®. In the world of pharmaceuticals, all drugs — be they brand-name or generic — must meet the same strict standards for ingredients, manufacturing processes and facilities, and be approved by the government.
