Timbuktu lies near a wide turn of the Niger River. Because of it’s location near the river it became a wealthy city. There were many people who came to Timbuktu to trade. The location of Timbuktu was in the center of the salt and gold mines. People would take their salt or gold and bring it to Timbuktu to trade it so that they wouldn’t have to travel from place to place to trade. Timbuktu was more wealthy then Paris, Rome or London at the height of it’s power. Trading in Timbuktu… The city was crowded with people who wanted to trade their goods. Slabs of rectangular salt were unloaded from camel caravans and sent by the Niger River to Jenne. The exchanging of gold and goods in Timbuktu with Chinese, Indian, Arab, and European traders made it a well-known city throughout Europe. They used shells and coins for money to trade for goods. The coins were made of gold without any stamp or superscription. In matters of small value they used certain shells brought from Persia. Learning in Tim
