There is no legal drinking or smoking age. The legal age to BUY wine or beer is 16 and to BUY distilled alcoholic beverages is 18. There is a pending piece of legislation, not yet enacted, to raise the age for purchase of beer and wine to 18. The legal age to buy cigarettes is 16. But these age restrictions are only for the purchase of alcohol or cigarettes and NOT the drinking of alcohol or smoking. France restricts purchase by age but not consumption. There is a law which prohibits children under age 16 from smoking in school but otherwise there is no age related restriction. .
