The latest laser technology allows for a new pre-implantation technique called assisted hatching, used in conjunction with IVF to increase a woman’s success rate. Assisted hatching means a small opening or cut is made in the outer layer of the embryos shortly before an embryo transfer to help in implantation. Precision is needed in the transfer but assisted hatching is now used successfully in about 100 IVF programs in the United States, and more than 7,000 births are estimated to have occurred after this procedure. Embryo transfer after assisted hatching is performed one or two days later than transfer after regular IVF procedures.
