Whats the impact of these incidents for Constitutions exploration and development plan?
The decrees would have made it easier for companies to gain concessions for oil drilling, mining and logging in Peru on indigenous lands. The forestry law, in particular, removed some 45 million hectares (more than 170,000 square miles) of Peruvian jungle from the government’s list of protected lands. However the mining concessions of Constitution are not on indigenous or any listed protected land. The Department of Environmental Affairs of the Ministry of Mining and Energy in Lima, Peru approved the Company’s Environmental Impact Declaration or DIA, which was submitted in mid-March 2009 and issued a Category 1 exploration permit. This approval enables Constitution to proceed with its drilling and pitting program, which is not affected (neither positive or negative) by the new law the government of President Garcia wants to push for the Amazon region.
