Homebase are a british homeware store like pottery barn in the US. The mention of irish sausages provides a seemingly legitimate reason for the store worker ask if the man is irish, which makes it funny when you find out why he is really asking if the man is irish. The fact that a man is asking for sausages in a homeware store implies that he is stupid. The joke uses the stereotype that Irish people are stupid, because as opposed to the man behind the counter saying ‘are you crazy’ or something similar, he says ‘are you irish’.
