Overcoming the prejudice built up by years of shoddy work. There are self-published books out there that make me cringe. Ugly covers, cheap paper, shoddy stories. Self-published work should be something of which the author can be proud. Don’t cut corners to save a buck here or there. Believe me, it will show. Use spiral binding only if you are writing a cookbook or hobby book that has to lay flat. Otherwise, it looks like junk. Hire a professional artist to do the cover and illustrations. Make sure your story has benefited from the careful eye of an editor. Don’t get so hung up on your words that you can’t rewrite them when you get some constructive criticism. When you get into your publicity campaign you’ll discover in a hurry that many review writers will not consider self-published work, period. Why? I have two theories– one, they’ve seen so many pathetic self-published books they can’t imagine you have something going for you and two, they have such a high workload they’ll use any
