Whats the food like?
It is safe to say that the food on your program will be different than what you eat at home. Food and nutrition are important to all of us, but they become far more important when we are expending additional energy. The food you will eat varies from program to program, but it is nutritious, filling and tastes good. Food will be prepared by your group. You will have to help cook – as well as help carry food, a camping stove and pots for the group. Rest assured that your leaders will help you with recipes and tips, so you will eat pretty well.Geography of Hope does not work with any survival programs. While you might get the opportunity to pick a few wild raspberries or strawberries for fun, you will not gather any of your food. Our wilderness education partner will provide you with all the food for a nutritious, filling and tasty diet during your program at the beginning of your journey and at designated re-supply points.
A If you are in a main tourist area many U.S chains like McDonalds, KFC and so on can be found as can many western restaurants, and every other eastern food such as Indian and Chinese. Thai food is available everywhere and I am not just stating the obvious , it is EVERYWHERE there seem to be more stalls , cafes and restaurants than all other types of shops put together . Thai food is often spicy but that is usually indicated in the dish description, very often food will come without so\pice and the chilli’s and so on will be in little jars on the table for you to add as required a lot of Thai food is not spicy if you dont like your food hot you can still find lots of great tasting dishes.
Corn, plantain, yam, cassava, millet and rice are the main staples and are served in various forms such as fufu, banku, kenkey, omo tuo, jollof, kelewele or tuo zafi (TZ). The starches are invariably accompanied by soups or stews made with vegetables and meat, chicken or fish. The fish can be dried or fresh. To round out the meal, a sauce of hot peppers, dried fish and tomatoes is served. In recent years the number and variety of Accra restaurants has steadily increased. Today one can find restaurants serving traditional Ghanaian food, Chinese, Indian, German, Lebanese, Caribbean, American (burgers, fried chicken, BBQ), Italian, French, Ethiopian, Senegalese and Ivorian food. Of course fresh fruit (mangoes, pineapple, paw-paw, oranges, avocadoes, bananas) abounds. As one of the premier cocoa-exporting nations, Ghana is known for excellent chocolate. Also wonderful is Ghanaian beer. The two main brands are Star and Club. Foreign beer, soda and a good selection of wine are available.
It’s incredible: the boys love it and it is balanced and healthy. At every meal there is plenty of choice so campers can always find something they like. At breakfast there is a main course (like eggs, waffles or pancakes) plus a cereal, yogurt and fruit bar. At lunch, main courses include tacos, BLTS, grilled cheese, and chicken patties; plus there is always a large salad and soup bar. Dinners include pizza, chicken, lasagna and a Friday night barbecue.
