Whats the first/oldest railway system in Asia?
The first passenger railway in Asia was between Bori Bunder, Bombay (Mumbai) and Thane in 1853. The first in China was not until the 1870s. In Japan it was 1872. In Persia (Iran) the first was not until 1914. In Turkey the İzmir to Aydın line began in 1860. In Asian Russia in the 1880s – many of these lines are in the now independent countries of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. In the Levant – modern Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Israel – 1920s (although Syria had a railway in 1895) The railway from Vladivostok started in 1897 – Vladivostok to Khabarovsk, but it was only in 1904 that the whole Trans-Siberian Railway was completed.
