Whats the etiquette when “viewing” the deceased prior to a funeral?

Normally the family should be there for the viewing, but I’ve known of a couple of cases where they were so distraught that they just couldn’t make themselves go and face all those people and then have to do it all over again the next day at the funeral. While it’s a little odd that nobody from the family showed up, there was probably what they viewed as a good reason, so try to understand that different folks grieve in different ways and not all of them are going to behave in a way that most of us think of as “normal”.
