Whats the economic impact of illegal immigrants to North Texas on taxes?
University of North Texas economics professor David J. Molina said the impact is different for the federal government and for local entities that must supply a public education for the community. Illegal immigrants pay a variety of taxes, including taxes that go into the Social Security system. The Social Security Administration and the Government Accountability Office have documented the earnings record that many believe comes illegal immigrants, because the Social Security number doesn’t match the name given, Dr. Molina notes. Thus, Dr. Molina says, “illegal immigrants are a plus to the federal budget. They put in money and they don’t take it out. They are slightly more of a drain on local governments than the federal government.” E-mail dsolis@dallasnews.
