Whats the difference between water resistant and water proof with watches?
Water resistant means it can handle splashes, but not being submerged. While watches that state they are waterproofed to a specified depth, are tested in a gas chamber and the presuure is increased to simulate a certain depth, a failed result would be indicated by a sudden drop in pressure caused by gas leaking in to the watch. This is not a good indication of how deep underwater it can go unless you are buying a divers watch with a cetified rating. 50m; okay to take swimming, snorkelling is not reccommended. 100m; swimming and snokelling okay, not reccommended for divng. 200m: okay for scuba diving. Divers watches with a certified rating (Citizen Promaster, Doxa, Omega etc) are tested 20% beyond their depth rating, So that they can safely be dived with to that depth.
