Whats the difference between version numbers of Adlib applications and software?
Since long there’s a distinction in Adlib between ‘applications’ and (core) ‘software’ (the latter also denoted as ‘executables’). In short it comes down to this: the software concerns programs on which applications run; the software may be compared to the engine of a car, the application to the rest of the car, and the same engine can be used in different cars. De most important component of the software is the program adlwin.exe. The software is the same for all Adlib users, regardless of whether you have a library, museum, archive or other application. The applications specified in, for example, the adlib.pbk file and the .fmt files (screens) on the other hand, can differ from customer to customer. The software has version numbers since the early eighties. De current version of the software is version 6.5.1. Normally you can replace the Adlib software with a more recent version without having to convert data or make other adjustments. The software is so called ‘upwards compatible’.
