What’s the difference between Used, Rebuilt and Remanufactured Engines?
This is probably the most common question we receive. Used engines, come from scrapped vehicles and are normally sold through wrecking yards or Japanese engine importers (see JDM FAQ). Some used engines claim to be tested, but since these companies do not usually employ experienced engine technicians, testing is most often minimal, at best. Most used engines are sold with an “as-is” warranty or a short duration, limited “engine replacement only” warranty, which may provide a replacement engine, but does not cover any labor, parts or fluid reimbursement. Many engine companies feel the Rebuilt and Remanufactured engines are the same thing. While many automotive techs. interchange these terms, there is actually quite a bit of difference between them. Rebuilt engines are usually machined and assembled in small machine shops that specialize in component (cylinder head, short block, etc.) machining. There is no specified process for rebuilding, and each engine is repaired as needed. Remanufa
