Whats the difference between tri ban and quad band phones?

Tri band mobiles can use three standard bands (frequencies). Quad band mobile can use four standard bands (frequencies). If you go to a region using this missing band, you will not be able to make or receive calls. Added note: Tri band should work most urban parts of the US. However, the rural parts of the States will use the missing band so you will not be able to make/receive calls in rural America. Check the frequencies your mobile uses (look up the model on the internet) – I think the US is set to use 850Hz and 1850Hz.

The non-technical answer is that the difference will determine where you will be able to use it around the world when you’re roaming. The technical answer is a tri-band phone works with GSM 900, 1800 and 1900 frequency mobile networks and a quad band works with GSM 850, 900, 1800 and 1900. These numbers refer to the MHz frequencies used by different mobile operators worldwide to carry your voice call. The addition of GSM 850 is really only of use in South America and a few other countries and a tri-band phone will work on one or other network in most countries.
