Whats the difference between torque and horsepower? Are there different types of horsepower?
Courtesy of Steve Cutchen: Brake horsepower is the horsepower measured where the power is deliverd, or example at the wheels. It included the losses to get from the engine to the wheels. The term comes from the brake used on a dyno to measure torque. This is as opposed to shaft horsepower, which is measured at the output shaft (crankshaft) of the engine. 1960’s era HP figures were typically shaft HP numbers. There is a specific SAE (Sociaty of Automotive Engineers) standard for measuring it.
