What’s the difference between the summer and the winter season?
A. The winter season kicks off in September, with the Relay Carnival at Stony Brook, and ends in April, with the Suffolk County Championships, also at Stony Brook. In between we attend roughly two meets per month, including an overnight away meet in December. All winter meets are held in so-called Short Course pools, e.g. pools that are 25 yards in length. All our practices are indoors, at the West Islip High School. The summer season begins in June when we move outdoors for evening practices to the Timberline pool. We also hold morning practices at the West Islip High School pool. Timberline is a Long Course pool, e.g. 50 meters in length, a little more than twice as long as a short course pool. Outdoor pools have their own rules. The biggest one concerns lightning: the pool is closed during thunderstorms, and remains closed for one hour after thunder has been heard. Otherwise outdoor swimming continues during rain. We have a weather link on our web site that addresses some of this. T
