Whats the difference between the Mobile Mapping Application and ESRI ArcPad?
Magellan’s Mobile Mapping application is easier to use in the field, and is bundled with MobileMapper Office software, which supports import/export of common GIS files, SHP, MIF and DXF. ArcPad has more functionality with better symbology and graphics options, including support for much tighter zoom potential (the Mobile Mapping application only allows the user to zoom into a 10 ft area). ArcPad supports high-resolution MrSID imagery, which many customers use for background imagery, whereas the MM application does not, but has JPEG2000 support. The Magellan Mobile Mapping Application is well-suited for entry-level GIS people but supports ESRI datasets too; a person with limited GPS knowledge and technical ability can learn and use Magellan’s software in a matter of minutes in the field, whereas a more advanced user will find ArcPad more suited to their needs.
