Smart mode calculates the chance that each team has of beating any other team using several assumptions, and uses this information when simulating the rest of the season. Details regarding these assumptions are described here for baseball, and here for football. Dumb mode assumes that each team has a 50% chance of beating any other team. Although this does not reflect reality, it is useful if you don’t trust the assumptions we are making!
