Vector quantities have size AND direction. The way I think about it is, can you have a negative value for it? For example, you can have a positive or negative velocity, but you cannot have negative speed. You also cannot have negative distance, but you can have a negative displacement. These quantities that cannot be negative have size and NOT direction, which are scalars.
