Whats the difference between pharmacy and pharmacology?

Hi Jessssica It’s not a problem as there is often confusion associated between the two. First and foremost Pharmacy and Pharmacology are very closely related, but I am sure you figured that bit out. I don’t want to try and lecture you, but let’s start with Pharmacology. The suffix “-logy” means the study of. The first part “pharma” means drug. So Pharmacology is the study of drugs. Put in another way Pharmacology is researching how drugs interact with the organic and chemical world. The role would involve lots of heavy based research in a laboratory in which you would design and implement new drugs. Pharmacy, on the other hand, involves the supply and monitoring of prescriptions/medicines. You are acting as a link between the doctor and their patient. So you would not be involved in designing drugs, but you would still learn how they interact and what they do. Can I suggest that you have a look at these websites for further information: The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain
