Whats the difference between marital property and separate property?
Marital property is all property that is contributed by either or both spouses during the marriage, including homes, cars, debts, money, business interests and other personal possessions. Separate property has been acquired by each spouse prior to marriage (or after the commencement of the divorce proceedings), as well as some inheritances and gifts received during the marriage by someone outside of the union. The team at The Barbara Law Firm will be able to help you determine what constitutes marital and separate property. Marital property will be divided under equitable distribution laws. Separate property will remain with the spouse to whom it belongs.
