Machine Translations are produced entirely by computers. Computer Assisted Translations are produced by human translators using computers to help them. The software packages used are known as translation memory tools and they do exactly what the name implies, they memorise fragments of the text which have already been translated and suggest the same translation the next time the same passages are encountered. Use of such tools can significantly increase the speed and accuracy of the translator’s work. Two of the most popular packages are called Trados and DéjàVu.
