Whats the difference between knowing and believing?
Knowing and Believing are both conclusions. The difference is how you got there. Believing something is true is “atomic” in the sense that it is adopted as the tiniest building block of truth for an individual. It just is. Knowing something is true is a conclusion derived from connecting previously accepted belief or knowledge-based conclusions with logical relationships. Let’s say your private parking spot is number 12. While the HR person tells you it is 12, you “believe” that instructions from the HR person are credible and you “believe” you heard her say your spot is 12. A logical ‘and’ combined with those two beliefs enables you to “know” that your spot is 12. Finally, when using a conclusion (C1) to help form another conclusion (C2), it doesn’t matter whether C1 is something you believe or know. If it’s true for whatever reason, the truth of C2 is unaffected. So, once something is known, it becomes a belief as far as using it in some other context.
