Whats the difference between IP Telephony and VoIP?
IP Telephony and VoIP are similar technologies, but the two terms should not be used interchangeably. IP (Internet Protocol) Telephony refers to a digital telephony solution that runs over a Local Area Network (LAN) instead of telephone wires. The focus of IP Telephony is an internal phone solution with more functionality and personalized control. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), by contrast, provides digital voice communications beyond the LAN: across wide area networks including the widest of all, the Internet. Another way to look at it: VoIP replaces your local and long distance phone service; IP Telephony replaces your interoffice phone system, plus all of the business services (call forwarding, phone number moves/changes/additions, etc.) your phone company provides.
