Whats the difference between homecoming dresses and prom dresses? Is one less formal?

Homecoming seems to be slightly less formal but that seems to be changing since I was in school. Also it’s subject to the fashion styles of the times. Homecoming dresses where shorter and Prom dresses were long when I was a kid, I have no idea if they still are.
