Whats the difference between high-end television and directing in Half Moon Bay?
A world of difference. For one, in television they paid us. That’s a high-stakes commercial business. You’ve got to have hits and ratings. In community theatre there is little time and money, but more freedom. The enthusiasm, especially in Half Moon Bay, is terrific. The people here are not about doing it for great rewards. They’re doing it because they like it. If someone asks for advice on a professional career, what do you say? Don’t give up your day job. Hollywood and New York are very difficult and competitive. But if you’re compelled to do it, do it. The people in Half Moon Bay have the best of both worlds: they’re getting to do it. If you go to Hollywood and New York, you might not get to do it. What about the commercial dilemma of creating art versus trying to catch a popular wave? That sounds like everything I ever did.
