With foundation piecing the block or segments of the block are printed on a foundation (paper, fabric, etc.) & you sew on the lines that segment the block through both the foundation and fabric piece. If the foundation is made from fabric, such as muslin, it becomes part of the block and is not removed when completed. Sometimes the fabric is not printed with sewing lines, it’s just used as a base as in Crazy Quilting. If it’s paper, or another type of tear-away stabilizer, it is removed after the stitching is complete. This is usually achieved by sewing on the stitching lines with very tiny machine stitches that perforate the paper, making it easier to remove. Good candidates for this type of piecing are “Mariner’s Compass”, “New York Beauty”, “Pineapple”, any block with sharp points, odd shaped or narrow pieces & crazy quilts. With English paper piecing the block is cut apart on the lines separating it into it’s components. Fabric pieces are then cut slightly larger than the paper sha
