Whats the difference between eduroam and Shibboleth?
Shibboleth and eduroam are complementary technologies that provide solutions to two different objectives. The eduroam infrastructure provides the network access technology to make it easier for users with valid accounts at JANET connected organisations to log on to networks (both at home and) when visiting participating organisation sites. Before authentication, a user will typically have no access to the network or Internet. Once logged in using the eduroam infrastructure, a user will have access to the network and the Internet. After having logged on to the network Shibboleth then facilitates admission to online resources that are subject to access control. The Shibboleth architecture defines a streamlined way of exchanging information between an individual and providers of digital data resources to authorise the user’s access to the resources.
