Whats the difference between Christian orthodox and Catholics?
The two churches were one until 1054. The two big differences, which are attributed with causing the Schism of 1054, are the authority of the Pope of Rome and the “filioque” clause in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. Filioque is Latin for “and the Son,” and was added to the creed 3 or 4 centuries after the creed was accepted as complete, in the place where we assert that we believe “in one Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father.” Filioque was added by a local council in Spain to the end of this phrase (“…who proceeds from the Father and the Son”) in order to counter some incorrect teaching that was arising there. Eventually, it was added to the Creed officially by the Pope of Rome, to be used by the whole church. The Eastern (Orthodox) churches never used it, asserting that the Creed was complete and the addition is erroneous. These two things, plus some political difficulties, caused the scism. Since that time, the Roman church has added new doctrines, such as the Immaculate
It is more than just a Pope-while the escigiological difrences and dogma seen in coligality and equality of Orhtodox Bishops and the papal monarchy does matter- there are doctrinal issues and attitude issues as well. The west has concepts like Mortal vrs venial sin which dose not existist in the Orhtodox church, also the Orthodox church dose not teach Purgatory as our views of sin and forgivness differ. Catholics have this sctrict code of penacnces for sins while we don’t as fixing or trying to stop a sin is part of repentance. We tend to be more holistic when looking at Christ’s incarnation while the west foucuses on his death and subistuatry atonement. Then there is the fruit of scholastiscm- the Roman Catholics have the idea of”deffintion of faith” and some will state “You could beleive what ever you wanted until a doctrine was defiend” While we Orthodox Christians see this as inventing new doctrine as the job of the Church is to preserve doctrine that as handed down for all times d
